Most RADAR agents observe experts performing tasks and then assist other users who are performing similar tasks. The interaction design for RADAR focused on developing user interfaces that allowed the intelligent functionality to improve the user's workflow without frustrating the user when the system's suggestions were either unhelpful or simply incorrect. For example, with regard to autonomy, the RADAR agents were allowed much flexibility in selecting ways to assist the user but were restricted from taking actions that would be visible to other people. This policy ensured that the user remained in control and mitigated the negative effects of mistakes. A large evaluation of RADAR demonstrated that novice users confronted with an e\u2010mail overload test performed significantly better, achieving a 37 percent better overall score when assisted by RADAR. To date recommender systems have been deployed within a variety of e\u2010commerce domains, covering a range of products such as books, music, and movies, and have proven to be a successful way to convert browsers into buyers. Recommendation technologies have a potentially much greater role to play in information discovery, however, and in this article we consider recent research that takes a fresh look at web search as a fertile platform for recommender systems research as users demand a new generation of search engines that are less susceptible to manipulation and more responsive to searcher needs and Magazine"],"published-print":{"date-parts":[[2017,3]]},"abstract":"<jats:p>For more than 25 years Ford Motor Company has been utilizing an AI\u2010based system to manage process planning for vehicle assembly at its assembly plants around the world. The scope of the AI system, known originally as the Direct Labor Management System and now as the Global Study Process Allocation System (GSPAS), has increased over the years to include additional functionality on ergonomics and powertrain assembly (engines and transmission plants). The knowledge about Ford's manufacturing processes is contained in an ontology originally developed using the KL\u2010ONE representation language and methodology. To preserve the viability of the GSPAS ontology and to make it easily usable for other applications within Ford, we needed to reengineer and convert the KL\u2010ONE ontology into a semantic web OWL\/RDF format. This article describes a general framework for building context\u2010aware interactive intelligent systems that comprises three major functions: (1) capture human\u2010system interactions and infer implicit context; (2) analyze and predict user intent and goals; and (3) provide effective augmentation or mitigation strategies to improve performance, such as delivering timely, personalized information and recommendations, adjusting levels of automation, or adapting visualizations. Our goal is to develop an approach that enables humans to interact more intuitively and naturally with automation that is reusable across domains by modeling context and algorithms at a higher level of abstraction. We first provide an operational definition of context and discuss challenges and opportunities for exploiting context. We then describe our current work toward a general platform that supports developing context\u2010aware applications in a variety of domains. We then explore an example use case illustrating how our framework can facilitate personalized collaboration within an information management and decision support tool. Magazine"],"published-print":{"date-parts":[[2018,3]]},"abstract":"<jats:p><jats:italic>From the stone age to the bronze, iron, and modern silicon ages, the discovery and characterization of new materials has always been instrumental to humanity's development and progress. With the current pressing need to address sustainability challenges and find alternatives to fossil fuels, we look for solutions in the development of new materials that will allow for renewable energy. To discover materials with the required properties, materials scientists can perform high\u2010throughput materials discovery, which includes rapid synthesis and characterization via X\u2010ray diffraction (XRD) of thousands of materials. A central problem in materials discovery, the phase map identification problem, involves the determination of the crystal structure of materials from materials composition and structural characterization data. This analysis is traditionally performed mainly by hand, which can take days for a single material system. In this work we present Phase\u2010Mapper, a solution platform that tightly integrates XRD experimentation, AI problem solving, and human intelligence for interpreting XRD patterns and inferring the crystal structures of the underlying materials. Phase\u2010Mapper is compatible with any spectral demixing algorithm, including our novel solver, AgileFD, which is based on convolutive nonnegative matrix factorization (NMF). AgileFD allows materials scientists to rapidly interpret XRD patterns, and incorporates constraints to capture prior knowledge about the physics of the materials as well as human feedback.
