After testing this theory on a broader sample, this study suggests and finds support for another predictor—“center-periphery dissonance” for the destabilization of the 2013-2014 wave. The emergence of this factor is common in the process of modernization, and is due to the heterogeneity of modernization processes, when a system’s central elements (“capitals”) are almost always modernized faster than its periphery. Identification of this factor is of considerable interest because accounting for this factor could significantly improve our capability to predict risks of sociopolitical destabilization of modernizing social systems.
[[2015,7,20
["Center-Periphery Dissonance as a Possible Factor of the Revolutionary Wave of 2013-2014
[[2015,7,20
bibr1-1069397115595374
Bangkok Metropolitan Administration. Researchers rely on interviewers to ensure a private setting. In reality, interviewers are guests in respondents’ homes and might find it difficult to achieve privacy. Hofstede assembled a database of 117,000 questionnaires from employees of a multinational company. Country means for these data were compared with Coronary Heart Disease (CHD) mortality data published by the World Health Organization. It was found that the probability of CHD is strongly predicted by work values of low power distance index (r = -.68,N = 29 countries), low uncertainty avoidance index (r = -.65,N = 33), and high individualism (r = .59,N= 33). Further analysis was used to identify factors at the individual level. Low probability of cardiac death over the next 20 years was found to be predictable from questions assessing tension at work, loyalty, deference, and high power-distance. The statistical factor that emerged might be called submissiveness, and its risky pole could be called in subordination. An individual-level study was designed to test for a relationship between work values and CHD risk factors. A cross-section of 62 healthy Japanese expatriates was compared with 53 British workers in the same employment. The two nationalities were remarkably similar, both in work values and probability of CHD. No protective CHD risk profile was found in the Japanese, contrary to the national base rates. Japanese men were unexpectedly found to be significantly more exhausted. The work values scales were found to be unreliable at the individual level. “Tension at work” and “fear of expressing disagreement” were found to predict several CHD risks.
[[2009,4,1
["Submissiveness and Risk of Heart Disease
[[2001,11,1
Berry, J. Emotional intelligence (EI) as a construct has predominantly been associated with the individual. Given that emotions are also implicit beliefs and that their experience, expression, and management are known to be driven by cultural values, we suggest EI to be culturally embedded. We therefore suggest that EI is culture-specific. Culture-specific EI serves as an important social resource affecting behaviors. We provide a brief review of literature that elucidates the multi-level nature of EI and highlights the role of culture as both antecedent and moderator of CSEI. Implications for theory and cross-cultural phenomena are discussed.
[[2020,7,1
["Implications of Culturally Implicit Perspective of Emotional Intelligence
[[2020,7,1
Ang S., Ng K. This has created confusion. In this study, we investigate whether the two revised Minkov-Hofstede dimensions of national culture - IDV-COLL and “flexibility-monumentalism” (FLX-MON) - have individual-level counterparts and if they are isomorphic (have the same structure at both levels of analysis). We find that the three main conceptual facets of national COLL (conformism, ascendancy, and exclusionism) and the three of MON (self-esteem, self-stability, and generosity) materialize as six independent individual-level dimensions in a nationally representative sample from Mongolia (
                    n
= 1500). This structure emerged in a confirmatory factor analysis, multidimensional scaling, and hierarchical cluster analyses. This is the first series of analyses of the structure of the individual-level ingredients of national IDV-COLL and FLX-MON,
                  </jats:p>
[[2023,1,20
["A Transposition of the Minkov-Hofstede Model of Culture to the Individual Level of Analysis: Evidence from Mongolia
[[2023,1,19
Brown T. However, the spread of the Internet may not lead to a higher intensity of terrorist attacks because direct perpetrators rely on close personal offline ties, and the national security agencies derive symmetrical benefits from Internet development as terrorists. In addition, the number of connections proxies a general level of country development, which is associated with less terrorist activity. We analyze the relationship between the number of Internet connections and the intensity of terrorist attacks using time-series cross-sectional data from the Global Terrorism Database from 1970 to 2018. Estimation of negative binomial regression models demonstrates an inverse relationship between Internet proliferation and the number of terrorist attacks, which holds for democracies and is absent for autocracies. Our results suggest that Internet proliferation is not a decisive factor in terrorism activity. Its impact on terrorism depends on the type of political regime and the level of socio-economic development.
[[2022,4,15
["Internet, Political Regime and Terrorism: A Quantitative Analysis
Laboratory for Monitoring the Risks of Socio-Political Destabilization, HSE University, Moscow, Russia
[[2022,4,14
Amorim G., Costa Lima R., Sampaio B. This article will review some of the work done with and by some of the author's colleagues in Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia, and China. These countries are all multicultural, yet the contributions of these Asian researchers to the role of cultural factors in development are not as well known as they should be. Some reasons for this situation will be discussed. In each of these countries, far-reaching changes now challenge traditional cultural values in family relations and child-rearing practices. But robust hypothesis testing requires making comparisons across cultures with not only different traditions but also different knowledge paradigms, which in turn calls for more sophisticated contextualization and thicker interpretations that risk eroding the basis of comparison. To respond to these issues, this study has used research on Chinese relationships as an example to demonstrate how the incommensurability/commensurability framework can be useful in dealing with the problem. It shows how a thorough examination of the unique and the incommensurably different has revealed commensurable similarities that can pave the way to theory advancement.
[[2016,3,14
["Contextuality, Commensurability, and Comparability in Comparative Research
[[2016,3,14
bibr1-1069397116630241
Paper presented at the International Conference on Confucianism, Democracy and Constitutionalism: Global and East Asian Perspectives, Institute for Advanced Studies in Humanities and Social Sciences
Ames R. It is based on nine studies involving 2,422 school-going youth in 12 nations. The study addressed two questions drawn from one of the basic postulates of interpersonal acceptance–rejection theory (IPARTheory): (a) To what extent are boys’ and girls’ perceptions of teacher acceptance related internationally to their psychological adjustment and school conduct? (b) To what extent are boys’ and girls’ perceptions of maternal and paternal acceptance related internationally to their psychological adjustment and school conduct? All studies included in this meta-analysis used the child version of the Parental Acceptance–Rejection Questionnaire for Mothers and Fathers (child PARQ: Mother and Father), child version of the Personality Assessment Questionnaire (child PAQ), the Teacher’s Evaluation of Student’s Conduct (TESC), and the Teacher Acceptance–Rejection Questionnaire (TARQ). Results showed that both parental and teacher acceptance correlate significantly in all countries with psychological adjustment and school conduct of children, regardless of gender differences. The study also showed that perceived teacher acceptance has a significantly stronger relation with the school conduct of boys than of girls.
[[2014,10,9
["Influence of Perceived Teacher Acceptance and Parental Acceptance on Youth’s Psychological Adjustment and School Conduct
[[2014,10,8
Ahmed R. This includes a patterned relationship between human behavior and societal variation. As societies become more complex, for example, our capacity to process a great deal of information quickly increases (the Flynn effect). Such adaptive processes illuminate societal variation because there is a reliable pattern in comparative research whereby behavioral differences are predicted by ecological and demographic differences. This pattern cannot be explained in terms of genetic adaptation but reflects changes mostly occurring in the lifetime of the individual. It involves an evolved capacity of humans (and other species) to adapt their behavior developmentally to local challenges. The resulting phenotypes are ecologically predictable (or “adaptive”) but may not maximize reproduction (e.g., low fertility in modern urban cities). We have found that work investment is heavier in societies where survival values are important, as compared to societies where self-expression values are important. Situational heavy work investors are more common in societies where survival values are important, as compared to societies where self-expression values are important. However, work-devoted persons are more common in societies where self-expression values are important, as compared to societies where survival values are important. It was also found that work investment is heavier in societies where mastery value is high, as compared to societies where mastery value is low. Dispositional heavy work investors are more common in societies where mastery value is high, as compared to societies where mastery value is low. Finally, it was found that men work more hours per week as compared to women in both masculine and feminine societies. However, the gender difference concerning time investment at work is greater in masculine societies, as compared to feminine societies. Dispositional heavy work investors are more common among men in masculine societies, than among men in feminine societies. The fact that the magnitude of work investment and the prevalence of its types vary in different cultural contexts demonstrate the importance of differentiating between types of heavy work investment; namely, realizing that not every heavy work investor is a workaholic.
[[2009,5,19
["Cross-Cultural Differences Concerning Heavy Work Investment
[[2009,5,19
Aycan, Z. & Kanungo, R.N. Because communism has been linked with distrust of government, it was hypothesized that (a) historical communism would be negatively associated with COVID-19 vaccination rates, and (b) trust in government would mediate the association. Two studies assessed these hypotheses. Study 1 tested the hypotheses among European, Asian, and African countries, while Study 2 focused on East and West Germany within Europe. All samples except Africa found support for an association between historical communism and lower COVID-19 vaccination rates. However, trust in government did not mediate the association in Study 1, though a significant indirect effect did emerge within Germany in Study 2. Associations held controlling for GDP and age of population. Together, the studies suggest that historical communism in Europe and Asia is associated with real-world behavior today, and that trust in government might be partly responsible for the effect within Germany but less likely within Europe as a whole.
[[2022,10,13
["Communism’s Lasting Effect? Unfortunately, depression and its association with WS are often ignored in substantive empirical studies. The current study addresses this gap by exploring the direct link between WS and depression and the moderating link between WS and national culture. Based on appraisal stress theory and vitamin stress theory, we used clinical trial data from 100 countries, with 5918 clinical trial projects (1999–2020). The baseline hypothesis finds that the chances of WS exacerbating into depression is about 11 times higher than that of WS not exacerbating into depression. In the moderation hypothesis, cultural moderators show an increase or decrease in directional effects. The power distance moderator increases the odds of the net effect of WS from 11 to 38, the individualism moderator increases the odds of net effects of WS from 11 to 148, the masculinity moderator decreases the odds from 11 to 9, the uncertainty avoidance moderator decreases it from 11 to 0, and long-term orientation decreases it from 11 to 4.7. An increase or decrease in the net effect suggests that moderators decrease or increase the correlation, respectively. Power distance and individualism decrease the link between WS and depression, while masculinity, uncertainty avoidance, and long-term orientation increase it. However, almost all modern research showing a preference for lighter skin tone (particularly in women) was conducted within populations of relatively light skin color. The current study was conducted among the Yali people, who are dark-skinned and native to the isolated highlands of West Papua. We found that for both males ( n = 53) and females ( n = 53) preferred skin tone was either average or slightly lighter than the average. At the same time, we found that the male preference for lighter skin tone in females was correlated with contact with other cultures. We discuss our results in the context of social and biological theories explaining skin tone preferences.
[[2013,4,24
["Face Color and Sexual Attractiveness
[[2013,4,24
Femmes claires, hommes foncés.
