They hunted everything from lions to guanacos, on four of six continents, from the beginning to the end of recorded time. But why? Hunting provided meat, and perhaps military exercise; but most kings subsisted on domesticated animals and plants, and delegated their wars to specialists. Besides, chasing animals cost money and time, and more than a few kings were killed or maimed in the act of bringing down game. The costs seem to outweigh the benefits. Much about human history seems to have been adaptive. Royal hunts do not. Hunting was the human adaptation on the savannah for hundreds of thousands of years. But it seems to be a vestige most kings can't shake.
[[2008,5,29
["Hunting Kings
[[2008,4,16
atypb1
Akbar Nama. The authors compared aggression toward managers in two samples of Israeli employees—Jews who are low collectivists and Arabs who are high collectivists. The study's sample was composed of 160 employees in 19 community centers—80 Israeli Jews and 80 Israeli Arabs. Results indicate that ethnic group is the major predictor of employees' aggressive behavior, whereas gender predicts aggression within each ethnic group. Furthermore, a significant distinction in the use of direct and indirect aggression was found between the two ethnic groups. Theories of power distance, cultural communication patterns, and comparative analysis of emotion expressions offer possible explanations for these results.
[[2008,10,27
["A Cross-Cultural Perspective on Aggressiveness in the Workplace
[[2008,10,27
Billings, D.K. We found that 94% of the cultures had images of a femme fatale, whereas only 42% of the sampled cultures had images of a status fatale. Our sample revealed that emotional involvement, rather than sexual gratification, was the primary motivation for becoming involved with a stranger who possessed qualities deemed culturally most desirable in the opposite sex. Three organizational states of pastoral adaptations are distinguished by subsistence dependence on food acquired through trade, the geographic scale of mobility, and habitat variables. The test was applied to a world sample of 108 societies where agriculture is the principal source of food. Six predictors of female contribution to agriculture are residence not patrilocal, polygynous marriage, no written language, use of money, low density of population, and no milk obtained from domestic animals. Women are more likely to contribute to agriculture in societies where they have a public rather than secluded role, where their work is necessary to obtain sufficient food, where their work is valuable for polygynous husbands, or where their work does not require the superior mobility and strength of men. Causes and effects of contribution by women to agriculture cannot be determined because the associated cultural customs adjust to each other during many generations.
[[2003,1,24
["Multiple Predictors of Contribution by Women to Agriculture
[[2002,8,1
Boserup. Notably, the speed of COVID-19 spread varies significantly across countries. This cross-cultural research proposes and empirically examines how national culture influences the speed of COVID-19 spread in three studies. Study 1 examines the effects of Hofstede’s national cultural dimensions on the speed of COVID-19 spread in 60 countries. Drawing on the GLOBE study (
                    House et al., 2004
), Study 2 investigates how GLOBE cultural dimensions relate to the speed of the pandemic’s spread in 55 countries. Study 3 examines the effect of cultural tightness in 31 countries. We find that five national cultural dimensions – power distance, uncertainty avoidance, humane orientation, in-group collectivism, and cultural tightness – are significantly related to the speed of COVID-19 spread in the initial stages, but not in the later stages, of the pandemic. Study 1 shows that the coronavirus spreads faster in countries with small power distance and strong uncertainty avoidance. Study 2 supports these findings and further reveals that countries with low humane orientation and high in-group collectivism report a faster spread of the disease. Lastly, Study 3 shows that COVID-19 spreads slower in countries with high cultural tightness.
                  </jats:p>
[[2022,11,25
["How National Culture Influences the Speed of COVID-19 Spread: Three Cross-Cultural Studies
[[2022,11,25
APM Research Lab. However, the spread of the Internet may not lead to a higher intensity of terrorist attacks because direct perpetrators rely on close personal offline ties, and the national security agencies derive symmetrical benefits from Internet development as terrorists. In addition, the number of connections proxies a general level of country development, which is associated with less terrorist activity. We analyze the relationship between the number of Internet connections and the intensity of terrorist attacks using time-series cross-sectional data from the Global Terrorism Database from 1970 to 2018. Estimation of negative binomial regression models demonstrates an inverse relationship between Internet proliferation and the number of terrorist attacks, which holds for democracies and is absent for autocracies. Our results suggest that Internet proliferation is not a decisive factor in terrorism activity. Its impact on terrorism depends on the type of political regime and the level of socio-economic development.
[[2022,4,15
["Internet, Political Regime and Terrorism: A Quantitative Analysis
Laboratory for Monitoring the Risks of Socio-Political Destabilization, HSE University, Moscow, Russia
[[2022,4,14
Amorim G., Costa Lima R., Sampaio B. Based upon the distinction between clock time and event time cultures, we examined time norms related to lateness. Pakistani respondents (from an event time culture) differed from the other two groups (from clock time cultures) in how they defined lateness to business meetings. Also, they found larger time intervals of lateness acceptable for appointments than the other two groups Based upon considerations related to power distance, we additionally tested whether not only clock or event time but also status would matter to lateness norms. In contrast to the South African and Pakistani respondents, Dutch respondents did not allow longer waiting times for people with higher status. We discuss our results in light of theoretical and practical implications and provide suggestions for future research.
[[2019,9,4
["Too Late? The sample consisted of 252 university students (24% men) with a mean age of 20.74 years on the island of Crete, Greece. Measures used were the adult versions of the Parental Acceptance–Rejection Questionnaire for mothers and fathers, youth version of the Parental Power–Prestige Questionnaire, and adult version of the Personality Assessment Questionnaire. Men perceived their fathers to be significantly less accepting but more powerful than did women. For both men and women, perceived maternal and paternal acceptances were significantly correlated with psychological adjustment. Moreover, parental prestige was positively correlated with men’s psychological adjustment, but parental power was negatively correlated with women’s psychological adjustment. Furthermore, women’s (but not men’s) remembrances of paternal acceptance in childhood were positively correlated with both parental power and parental prestige. Results of hierarchical regression analyses revealed that remembered maternal acceptance and the composite variable parental power–prestige were uniquely and positively associated with men’s psychological adjustment. Moreover, perceived parental power was uniquely but negatively associated with men’s adjustment. For women, however, both remembered maternal and paternal acceptances were unique predictors of psychological adjustment. Neither parental power nor prestige moderated the relation between perceived acceptance and psychological adjustment for women, but parental power did moderate this relationship for men.
[[2014,3,28
["The Moderating Role of Parental Power and Prestige on the Relationship Between Remembered Parental Acceptance and Psychological Adjustment Among Young Greek Adults
[[2014,3,28
Aiken L. However, the evolutionary origins of athletic behavior, that is, behavior which is associated with participating in and watching athletic contests, are rather obscure, as they do not seem to contribute directly to increasing survival or reproductive success. This article argues that athletic behavior has been shaped in ancestral times jointly by intrasexual selection forces, where men look for potential allies, and intersexual selection forces, where men look for spouses for their female relatives. On the basis of this evolutionary framework, a number of hypotheses are derived: First, men are more interested than women in taking part in and watching sports. In addition, men are more interested than women in taking part in and watching competitive sports than non-competitive sports, and are more interested in team sports than individual sports. Finally, men and women differ in their motives for participating in sports, while the sex differences in athletic behavior between men and women are consistent across different cultures. Evidence from a sample composed of 37 different countries provides support for all hypotheses.
[[2014,5,30
["The Athlete and the Spectator Inside the Man
[[2014,5,29
Buss D. Moreover, social networks undergo changes throughout the school years, making this a suitable research area for confirming the effect of network composition on the formation of human values. In this study, we examined the stability and change of values among Korean adolescents, while assessing the influence of one’s social network on the importance and change of values. Our findings reveal that the importance of conservation values among Korean teenagers increases during mid-late adolescence, and that the self-transcendence value is a settled disposition. We argue that these changes arise from a specific social structure and culture in South Korea, where children assume adult roles at an earlier age. In addition, the structural equation model revealed that social support enhances individuals’ prosocial and post-materialistic values. We introduce the concept of gratitude as a virtue, explaining its differences from gratitude viewed as a positive emotion. Although most research on gratitude uses samples from Western, Educated, Industrialized, Rich, and Democratic (WEIRD) societies (primarily from the United States), we discuss the importance of studying the development of gratitude across different cultural groups. Despite the evidence to suggest that the expression of gratitude is viewed as desirable across multiple societies and historical periods, there is no reason to assume that developmental pathways found in one or other WEIRD society would be found in non-WEIRD societies or that the latter would have similar pathways. Children’s gratitude expression across countries is explored in this special issue using Baumgarten-Tramer’s (1938) paradigm as well as Kağıtçıbaşı’s (2007) framework to address both differences and similarities across cultures.
[[2017,11,3
["The Development of the Virtue of Gratitude: Theoretical Foundations and Cross-Cultural Issues
Jonathan R.
