A total of 170 clast samples and 328 till matrix samples collected for geochemical analysis across the region, were analyzed for a total of 39 elements. Major lithologic contacts used here to delineate till clast provenance were based on recent bedrock mapping. Eleven known mineral occurrences and a gossan are used to define point source targets for matrix geochemical dispersal trains and to estimate probable distance and direction of transport from unknown sources. Clast trains are traceable for distances of approximately 10 km, whereas till geochemical dispersal patterns are commonly lost within 5 km of transport. Most dispersal patterns reflect more than a single direction of glacial transport.

These data indicate that a single till sheet, 1–4 m thick, was deposited as the dominant ice-flow direction fluctuated between southeastward, eastward, and northward over the study area. Directions of early flow represent changes in ice sheet dominance, first from the northwest and then from the west. In the late 19th to early 20th centuries, he opened three quarries in mafic plutonic rocks in the vicinity of the Chickahominy Mountain, north of St. Andrews: the Bocabec black granite quarry (1893), the Steen Lake black granite quarry (1895), and the Glenelg porphyry quarry (1906). Much of the information in brief articles in local newspapers lacks sufficient detail to gain a full understanding of the historical development of these quarries. To obtain a clearer timeline for production of stone from the quarries, the rock type in each was examined and compared to black granite monuments in nearby cemeteries known to be sourced from these specific quarries. Previous investigations did not entirely rule out the possibility that the Stuart quarries may have been a source for the headstones placed in the Fairview Lawn Cemetery in Halifax, Nova Scotia, to mark the graves of some of those who were lost when the Titanic sank in 1912. Our detailed analysis of rock textures and production histories leads us to conclude that none of the Stuart quarries could have been a source for the Titanic headstones and supports the previous assessment that they came from Charles Hanson quarry.
[[2021,4,20
["Investigation of Sheriff Stuart’s black granite quarries in Charlotte County, southwestern New Brunswick: implications for the source of the titanic headstones in Halifax, Nova Scotia
[[2020,9,13
Atlantic Geology
[[2021,4,20
[[2020,9,13
["1718-7885","0843-5561
[[2020,9,13
2022,4,4
["atgeol
The South Mountain Batholith (SMB) is a large, ca. 370 Ma, composite intrusion which was emplaced after deformation associated with the Middle Devonian Acadian Orogeny. Structures in the SMB include primary flow features, .NE-trending faults (≈045°) and fractures (at 040° and 062°) and NW-trending faults and joints (at 315°, 325° and 335°). Joint trends are regional in nature, showing no relationship to intrusive features. Granite-related dykes, veins, alteration and mineralization in the faults and joints indicate a primary-regional status for these structures. NE-trending fractures are interpreted as P and R shears (Riedel geometry) associated with dextral displacement on the NE-trending faults, whereas NW-trending joints are interpreted as tension joints and attending conjugate-shear joints of small dihedral angle reflecting NW-transpression during intrusion. Repetitive joint and fault development continued into the Permian, implying a fixed regional stress through this interval.

The joint and fault systems in the SMB strongly influenced the localization and character of granite-related mineralization. Based on 'total' populations 4 benthonic foraminiferal assemblages, not strictly biocenoses, are recognized. Assemblage 1, dominated by Miliammina fusca, has a mean diversity of 4.75, a mean depth of 1.85 m, a mean pH (substrate) of 6.7, and the substrate is coarse-grained. This assemblage is found in the Upper Estuarine (intertidal) Zone in St. Mary's River, south of Sherbrooke. Assemblage 2, dominated by Eggerella advena, has a mean diversity of 12.5, a mean depth of 7 m, a mean pH (substrate) of 8.16, and the substrate is very fine-grained. It is found in the Lower Estuarine Zone in the lower reaches of St. Mary's River, Wine Harbour Bay, the western and northern areas of Gegogan Harbour, and the eastern shore south of Port Bickerton. Assemblage 3, dominated by Elphidium clavatum, has a mean diversity of 14.3, a mean depth of 9m, a mean pH (substrate) of 7.2, and the substrate is coarse- to fine-grained sand. It occurs in the Marginal Marine Zone (Scott) or Nearshore Biofacies (Bartlett) in St. Mary's River (3 to 5 km from the mouth) and at the head and near the mouth of Indian Harbour. Assemblage 4 dominated by Cibicides lobatulus, Eggerella advena and Elphidium clavatum, has a mean diversity of 19.9, a mean depth of 12.2m, a mean pH (substrate) of 7.16, and the substrate is medium- to fine-grained sand. It occurs in the Open Ocean-Nearshore Zone (Scott) or the Open Bay Biofacies (Bartlett), inside and outside Holland's Harbour, the southwest and central area of Indian Harbour, at the mouth of St. Mary's River, on the eastern side of Gegogan Harbour, and east of Crook Point.
[[2014,9,24
["Distribution of Foraminiferida South of Sherbrooke, Nova Scotia
[[1978,12,1
Atlantic Geology
[[2021,12,2
[[1978,12,1
[[1978,12,1
https://doi.org/10.4138/1964
1718-7885","0843-5561
[[1978,12,1
2022,3,30
University of New Brunswick Libraries - Whereas the type species of Megapezia, Megapezia pineoi, has tetradactyl pedal imprints, the pes imprint of Megapezia longipes is pentadactyl, a feature that precludes assignment to this ichnogenus. Rather, the tracks share two characteristics with the ichnogenus Matthewichnus, namely elongate digits II and III on the manus, and a pes imprint oriented anterolaterally to the manus imprint, and are thus tentatively reassigned to that ichnogenus. Cf. Matthewichnus longipes is retained as a separate ichnospecies pending the collection of additional ma-terial that can be compared with other species within the ichnogenus. With the tentative reassignment of the Plainville tracks to Matthewichnus, Megapezia becomes monospecific and is no longer recorded in New England. The tracks are the first known occurrence of Matthewichnus from this region.
[[2016,5,10
["Megapezia longipes Willard and Cleaves 1930 from the Pennsylvanian Rhode Island Formation of Massachusetts: ichnotaxonomic status
[[2016,4,10
Atlantic Geology
[[2016,5,10
[[2016,4,10
["1718-7885","0843-5561
[[2016,4,10
2022,4,5
["atgeol
[[2014,9,24
["Editor's Page
[[1966,9,30
Atlantic Geology
[[2021,12,2
[[1966,9,30
[[1966,9,30
https://doi.org/10.4138/1508
1718-7885","0843-5561
[[1966,9,30
