A hypoxic ventilatory response (HVR) test and a submaximal exercise test were performed at sea level prior to the training camp and again after 15 d at altitude (ALT15). Ventilation (<jats:italic>V<\/jats:italic><jats:sub>E<\/jats:sub>), end\u2010tidal carbon\u2010dioxide partial pressure (P<jats:sub>ET<\/jats:sub>CO<jats:sub>2<\/jats:sub>) and oxyhaemoglobin saturation via pulse oximetry (SpO<jats:sub>2<\/jats:sub>) were measured at rest and during submaximal cycling at 250\u2005W. A hill climb (HC) performance test was conducted at sea level and after 14 d at altitude (ALT14) using a road of similar length (5.5\u20136\u2005km) and gradient (4.8\u20135.3%). Power output was measured using SRM cranks. Average HC power at ALT14 was normalised to sea level power (HC%). Multiple regression was used to identify significant predictors of performance at altitude. <jats:italic>Results<\/jats:italic>: At ALT15, there was a significant increase in resting <jats:italic>V<\/jats:italic><jats:sub>E<\/jats:sub> (10.3 \u00b1 1.9 vs. 12.2 \u00b1 2.4\u2005L\u00b7min<jats:sup>\u22121<\/jats:sup>) and HVR (0.34 \u00b1 0.24 vs. 0.71 \u00b1 0.49\u2005L\u00b7min<jats:sup>\u22121<\/jats:sup>\u00b7%<jats:sup>\u22121<\/jats:sup>), while P<jats:sub>ET<\/jats:sub>CO<jats:sub>2<\/jats:sub> (38.4 \u00b1 2.3 vs. 32.1 \u00b1 3.3\u2005mmHg) and SpO<jats:sub>2<\/jats:sub> (97.9 \u00b1 0.7 vs. 94.0 \u00b1 1.7%) were reduced (<jats:italic>P<\/jats:italic> &lt; .05). Multiple regression revealed \u0394HVR and exercise <jats:italic>V<\/jats:italic><jats:sub>E<\/jats:sub> at altitude as significant predictors of HC% (adjusted <jats:italic>r<\/jats:italic><jats:sup>2<\/jats:sup> = 0.913; <jats:italic>P<\/jats:italic> = 0.003). <jats:italic>Conclusions<\/jats:italic>: Ventilatory acclimatisation occurred during a 2 wk altitude training camp in elite cyclists and a higher HVR was associated with better performance at altitude, relative to sea level.
