{"status":"ok","message-type":"work","message-version":"1.0.0","message":{"indexed":{"date-parts":[[2026,1,2]],"date-time":"2026-01-02T17:19:02Z","timestamp":1767374342971},"reference-count":28,"publisher":"Wiley","issue":"3","license":[{"start":{"date-parts":[[2013,8,12]],"date-time":"2013-08-12T00:00:00Z","timestamp":1376265600000},"content-version":"vor","delay-in-days":0,"URL":"http:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/termsAndConditions#vor"}],"content-domain":{"domain":[],"crossmark-restriction":false},"short-container-title":["Euro J of Education"],"published-print":{"date-parts":[[2013,9]]},"abstract":"<jats:p>This article analyses the impacts of the <jats:styled-content style=\"fixed-case\">P<\/jats:styled-content>ortuguese quality assurance system on academic cultures, using the Cultural Theory proposed by <jats:styled-content style=\"fixed-case\">D<\/jats:styled-content>ouglas (1970, 1982) and developed by <jats:styled-content style=\"fixed-case\">T<\/jats:styled-content>hompson, <jats:styled-content style=\"fixed-case\">E<\/jats:styled-content>llis and <jats:styled-content style=\"fixed-case\">W<\/jats:styled-content>ildavsky (1990) as an explanatory framework for Portuguese academics' preference formation in relation to quality assessment.<\/jats:p><jats:p>The <jats:styled-content style=\"fixed-case\">P<\/jats:styled-content>ortuguese higher education system has been undergoing a change of paradigm by moving from traditional collegial system to a legal framework influenced by <jats:styled-content style=\"fixed-case\">N<\/jats:styled-content>ew <jats:styled-content style=\"fixed-case\">P<\/jats:styled-content>ublic Management. The former institutional context, where academic collegiality was the basis of democratic decision, promoted the egalitarian way of life, where the group dimension is stronger.<\/jats:p><jats:p>However, recent legislation has promoted two different logics. On the one hand it has decreased the influence of the group dimension by favouring individualistic values and beliefs. On the other, it has reinforced the grid dimension through greater centralisation of power and separation of roles of universities and polytechnics, thus promoting the hierarchic way of life.
