{"status":"ok","message-type":"work","message-version":"1.0.0","message":{"indexed":{"date-parts":[[2026,1,22]],"date-time":"2026-01-22T12:52:38Z","timestamp":1769086358522,"version":"3.49.0"},"reference-count":17,"publisher":"SAGE Publications","issue":"8","license":[{"start":{"date-parts":[[2020,6,11]],"date-time":"2020-06-11T00:00:00Z","timestamp":1591833600000},"content-version":"unspecified","delay-in-days":0,"URL":"https:\/\/creativecommons.org\/licenses\/by-nc\/4.0\/"}],"funder":[{"DOI":"10.13039\/501100003955","name":"Oslo University Hospital","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","id":[{"id":"10.13039\/501100003955","id-type":"DOI","asserted-by":"publisher"}]}],"content-domain":{"domain":["journals.sagepub.com"],"crossmark-restriction":true},"short-container-title":["Clin Rehabil"],"published-print":{"date-parts":[[2020,8]]},"abstract":"<jats:sec><jats:title>Objective:<\/jats:title><jats:p> To compare the functional outcomes and length of hospital stay for patients treated with conventional physiotherapy compared to a new ankle trainer device after Weber B ankle fractures. <\/jats:p><\/jats:sec><jats:sec><jats:title>Design:<\/jats:title><jats:p> The patients were randomized, and then followed up at 3, 6, 12 and 52\u2009weeks by a blinded physiotherapist. <\/jats:p><\/jats:sec><jats:sec><jats:title>Setting:<\/jats:title><jats:p> This study was done at a level 1 trauma centre. <\/jats:p><\/jats:sec><jats:sec><jats:title>Subjects:<\/jats:title><jats:p> One hundred and forty consecutive patients with Weber B ankle fractures that were operated on were screened for eligibility, of whom 113 were included in the study. <\/jats:p><\/jats:sec><jats:sec><jats:title>Interventions:<\/jats:title><jats:p> Conventional physiotherapy with stretching exercises, using a non-elastic band or using new ankle trainer. <\/jats:p><\/jats:sec><jats:sec><jats:title>Main measures:<\/jats:title><jats:p> Outcomes were evaluated with Olerud\u2013Molander ankle score, Visual analogue scale for pain and ankle dorsiflexion at 3, 6, 12 and 52\u2009weeks follow-up. Time of hospitalization and complications were registered. <\/jats:p><\/jats:sec><jats:sec><jats:title>Results:<\/jats:title><jats:p> Superior Olerud\u2013Molander ankle scores were observed at three\u2009weeks follow-up in the ankle trainer group 40.9 (10.8), compared to the conventional group 35.3 (14.2) ( P\u2009=\u20090.021). At one-year follow-up, there was no difference between the groups ( P\u2009=\u20090.386). The ankle trainer group had a shorter hospital stay with a mean 2.6\u2009days (0.98) compared to 3.2\u2009days (1.47) in the conventional group ( P\u2009=\u20090.026). <\/jats:p><\/jats:sec><jats:sec><jats:title>Conclusion:<\/jats:title><jats:p> The patients who were treated with the new ankle trainer device recovered more rapidly, evaluated by the Olerud\u2013Molander ankle score and had a shorter stay in hospital compared to the conventional physiotherapy group.
