{"status":"ok","message-type":"work","message-version":"1.0.0","message":{"indexed":{"date-parts":[[2026,2,26]],"date-time":"2026-02-26T03:22:45Z","timestamp":1772076165446,"version":"3.50.1"},"reference-count":41,"publisher":"Pensoft Publishers","license":[{"start":{"date-parts":[[2022,9,15]],"date-time":"2022-09-15T00:00:00Z","timestamp":1663200000000},"content-version":"vor","delay-in-days":0,"URL":"http:\/\/creativecommons.org\/licenses\/by\/4.0\/"}],"content-domain":{"domain":[],"crossmark-restriction":false},"short-container-title":["ZK"],"abstract":"<jats:p>Examination of numerous specimens characterised by predorsal scute, long maxilla, indented preopercle and pelvic scute lacking a spine and previously identified as <jats:italic>Stolephorus bengalensis<\/jats:italic> (Dutt &amp; Babu Rao, 1959) or <jats:italic>Stolephorus insularis<\/jats:italic> Hardenberg, 1933, revealed four distinct species, true <jats:italic>S. bengalensis<\/jats:italic> (distributed from the Bay of Bengal to Pakistan) and three new species, viz., <jats:italic>Stolephorus eldorado<\/jats:italic><jats:bold>sp. nov.<\/jats:bold> (Taiwan to Java, Indonesia), <jats:italic>Stolephorus diabolus<\/jats:italic><jats:bold>sp. nov.<\/jats:bold> (Strait of Malacca, from Penang , Malaysia, to Singapore) and <jats:italic>Stolephorus eclipsis<\/jats:italic><jats:bold>sp. nov.<\/jats:bold> (Bintan Island, Riau Archipelago, Indonesia). Characters separating the four species include numbers of gill rakers on each gill arch and vertebrae and pelvic fin and dorsal-fin ray lengths. Two molecular markers (mitochondrial cytochrome <jats:italic>b<\/jats:italic> and cytochrome oxidase I genes) demonstrated the distinction of three of the species examined morphologically and enabled a reconstruction of their phylogenetic relationships.
