Based on both head and genitalic characters, the genus is divided into two subgenera: typical <jats:italic>Stenocranus<\/jats:italic> with many Old World species and two Canadian species, and subgenus <jats:italic>Codex<\/jats:italic><jats:bold>nov.<\/jats:bold> for other New World species. The type of <jats:italic>Delphax dorsalis<\/jats:italic> Fitch, 1851 is a specimen of <jats:italic>Stenocranus pallidus<\/jats:italic> Beamer, 1946 <jats:bold>syn. nov.<\/jats:bold>, and \"<jats:italic>S. dorsalis<\/jats:italic>\" <jats:italic>sensu<\/jats:italic> Beamer is <jats:italic>S. unipunctatus<\/jats:italic> (Provancher, 1872). A lectotype of <jats:italic>Delphax vittata<\/jats:italic> St\u00e5l, 1862 is designated for the taxon <jats:italic>S. unipunctatus<\/jats:italic> (<jats:italic>sensu<\/jats:italic> Beamer, <jats:italic>nec<\/jats:italic> Provancher); its paralectotypes are specimens of <jats:italic>S<\/jats:italic>. <jats:italic>acutus<\/jats:italic> Beamer. The apparent evolutionary relationships of this fauna to other species of the world Stenocranini and within the superficially similar Saccharosydnini reveal numerous homoplasies and dramatic autapomorphies, contrasted with only a few reliable synapomorphies. A hierarchical classification of Delphacidae, based on the most distinctive synapomorphies, defines subfamily Delphacinae as encompassing at least four tribes: Vizcayini, Stenocranini, Tropidocephalini, and Delphacini, with \"Kelisiinae\" reduced to subtribe of Stenocranini and \"Saccharosydnini\" placed within
