They can be grouped into two broad approaches, referred to in this article as sampling manipulation and software synthesis, respectively. This article begins with an introduction to the basics of digital representation of sound, including the notions of sampling and storage. Then, it presents the fundamentals of sound processing and analysis by means of the short\u2010time Fourier transform method, followed by an introduction to sampling manipulation techniques.
