The association mode for the interactions of both the pyrrolyl NH and bridging CH protons with anions was confirmed by <jats:sup>1<\/jats:sup>H NMR chemical shifts in CD<jats:sub>2<\/jats:sub>Cl<jats:sub>2<\/jats:sub> and supported by theoretical studies. The binding constants (<jats:italic>K<\/jats:italic><jats:sub>a<\/jats:sub>) were estimated as 8.1\u00d710<jats:sup>4<\/jats:sup>, 2.0\u00d710<jats:sup>3<\/jats:sup>, 3.3\u00d710<jats:sup>2<\/jats:sup>, 1.3\u00d710<jats:sup>4<\/jats:sup>, and 80<jats:sc>\u2009m<\/jats:sc><jats:sup>\u22121<\/jats:sup> for F<jats:sup>\u2212<\/jats:sup>, Cl<jats:sup>\u2212<\/jats:sup>, Br<jats:sup>\u2212<\/jats:sup>, H<jats:sub>2<\/jats:sub>PO<jats:sub>4<\/jats:sub><jats:sup>\u2212<\/jats:sup>, and HSO<jats:sub>4<\/jats:sub><jats:sup>\u2212<\/jats:sup> by UV\/Vis absorption spectral changes in CH<jats:sub>2<\/jats:sub>Cl<jats:sub>2<\/jats:sub>. Augmentation of <jats:italic>K<\/jats:italic><jats:sub>a<\/jats:sub> compared with dipyrrolylquinoxaline for H<jats:sub>2<\/jats:sub>PO<jats:sub>4<\/jats:sub><jats:sup>\u2212<\/jats:sup> is much larger than those for other anions. Contrary to other anions, F<jats:sup>\u2212<\/jats:sup> quenches the emission almost completely, which was detected by the fluorescence spectrum as well as the naked\u2010eye.
