Cytoskeleton"],"published-print":{"date-parts":[[1987,1]]},"abstract":"<jats:title>Abstract<\/jats:title><jats:p>Sea urchin egg spectrin has been purified from a homogenate of unfertilized <jats:italic>Strongylocentrotus purpuratus<\/jats:italic> eggs using standard biochemical procedures. SDS\u2010PAGE analysis of the molecule revealed a closely spaced, high molecular weight doublet at 237\/234 kDa (present in an equimolar ratio). Rotary shadowed images of egg spectrin revealed a double\u2010stranded, elongate, flexible rod\u2010shaped contour, measuring 210 nm in length and \u223c 4\u20138 nm in width. Additionally, this molecule is shown to be immunologically related to avian erythroid spectrin, since it cross\u2010reacts with antibodies prepared against the chicken erythrocyte \u03b1\u2010spectrin\/240 kDa subunit. The interaction of egg spectrin with actin was examined by sedimentation and falling\u2010ball viscometry assays. The binding and cross linking properties of spectrin to actin demonstrate a unique Ca<jats:sup>++<\/jats:sup>\u2010sensitive regulation at micromolar Ca<jats:sup>++<\/jats:sup> concentrations.
