Interruption of the rubro\u2010tegmentospinal tract was associated with a complete disappearance of the cells in the contralateral magnocellular red nucleus and some cell loss in the adjoining tegmental gray. Interruption of the central tegmental bundle results in a complete cell loss in the parvicellular part of the ipsilateral red nucleus. Such a lesion is associated with degeneration of the rubro\u2010olivary fibers that terminate along the dorsal lamella of the ipsilateral principal olive. The interruption of the superior cerebellar peduncle does not lead to any cell loss in the red nuclei. The above findings suggest that in the monkey the red nucleus proper discharges exclusively downwards. The small\u2010celled part gives rise to fibers that travel in the ipsilateral central tegmental bundle and the large\u2010celled part gives rise to entirely crossed axons that descend in the rubro\u2010tegmentospinal tract. There apparently exist marked differences in the distribution of the nervous elements within the red nucleus and, correspondingly, in the origin of the efferent nervous pathways in the cat and in the monkey. The interruption of the rubro\u2010tegmentospinal tract does not lead per se to any noticeable motor impairment but appears to be an essential feature in the appearance of postural tremor and possibly in the production of other extrapyramidal signs in the monkey.<\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.1002\/cne.901280208","type":"journal-article","created":{"date-parts":[[2005,1,1]],"date-time":"2005-01-01T22:17:08Z","timestamp":1104617828000},"page":"223-243","source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":61,"title":["The red nucleus and its efferent nervous pathways in the monkey"],"prefix":"10.1002","volume":"128","author":[{"given":"L.
