A panel of hybrid anti\u2010bodies with anti\u2010immunoglobulin and anti\u2010Southern Bean Mosaic Virus specificities permitted the identification of both \u03ba and \u03bc chain determinants on cell surfaces, indicating that surface\u2010associated immunoglobulin presumably represents IgM.<\/jats:p><jats:p>The cells carrying immunoglobulin on their surface were identified as lymphocytes. In cell populations from lymph nodes 95 % of the mature lymphocytes possessed surface\u2010bound \u03ba and \u03bc determinants. This indicates that both thymus derived (T) and bone marrow\u2010derived (B) lymphocytes express IgM.<\/jats:p><jats:p>Plasma cells do not carry immunoglobulin on the cell surface, which implies that antigen\u2010induced differentiation of B lymphocytes entails loss of surface IgM expression.<\/jats:p><jats:p>In the thymus, surface\u2010associated immunoglobulin could not be detected on the vast majority (98 %) of the cells, but 2 % positive cells were found.
