Antibodies with specificities for mouse \u03b3\u2010chains of with Ig\u2010unrelated specificities (anti\u2010ovalbumin, anti\u2010<jats:italic>E. coli<\/jats:italic> \u03b2\u2010galactosidase) do not elicit this inhibition. Bivalent pepsin (Fab')<jats:sub>2<\/jats:sub> fragments mediate the same inhibition at the same concentrations, while monovalent papain Fab fragments of such anti\u2010Ig antibodies have a 100\u2010fold lower capacity to inhibit differentiation into PFC. Rabbit as well as chicken anti\u2010Ig antibodies are inhibitory; this indicates that the inhibition is not complement\u2010mediated. Cells stimulated for 6 h by LPS can no longer be inhibited by anti\u2010Ig antibodies from differentiating to PFC, a finding which indicates that changes take place in the mitogen\u2010stimulated cells which may involve surface\u2010bound Ig molecules.
