{"status":"ok","message-type":"work","message-version":"1.0.0","message":{"indexed":{"date-parts":[[2026,3,6]],"date-time":"2026-03-06T01:12:31Z","timestamp":1772759551861,"version":"3.50.1"},"reference-count":40,"publisher":"Wiley","issue":"4","license":[{"start":{"date-parts":[[2005,11,17]],"date-time":"2005-11-17T00:00:00Z","timestamp":1132185600000},"content-version":"vor","delay-in-days":4978,"URL":"http:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/termsAndConditions#vor"}],"content-domain":{"domain":[],"crossmark-restriction":false},"short-container-title":["Eur J Immunol"],"published-print":{"date-parts":[[1992,4]]},"abstract":"<jats:title>Abstract<\/jats:title><jats:p>On the basis of expression of the T cell differentiation antigen CD27, human peripheral blood CD4<jats:sup>+<\/jats:sup> memory cells can be divided into two subsets, a large CD45RA<jats:sup>\u2212<\/jats:sup>CD27<jats:sup>+<\/jats:sup> (82%) and a small CD45RA<jats:sup>\u2212<\/jats:sup>CD27<jats:sup>\u2212<\/jats:sup> (18%) population. Analysis of the functional properties of these memory T cell subsets showed that proliferative responses to the recall antigen tetanus toxoid (TT), shortly after booster immunization, were mainly confined to the CD27<jats:sup>\u2212<\/jats:sup> population. Also, in atopic individuals, proliferative responses to allergens for which these individuals are sensitized, were limited to the CD45RA<jats:sup>\u2212<\/jats:sup>CD27<jats:sup>\u2212<\/jats:sup> population. After stimulation with CD3 monoclonal antibody and phorbol ester, CD27<jats:sup>+<\/jats:sup> cells produced vast amounts of interleukin (IL)\u20102 but minimal amounts of IL\u20104, whereas in marked contrast, CD27<jats:sup>\u2212<\/jats:sup> T cells secreted low levels of IL\u20102 and high levels of IL\u20104. The capacity of the vast majority of these latter cells to produce IL\u20104 was found to be a stable feature since high IL\u20104\u2010secreting T cell clones were generated from the CD27<jats:sup>\u2212<\/jats:sup> subset. These findings suggest that upon renewed as well as chronic antigenic stimulation <jats:italic>in vivo<\/jats:italic>, memory T cells acquire the CD45RA<jats:sup>\u2212<\/jats:sup>CD27<jats:sup>\u2212<\/jats:sup> phenotype and that, as a consequence, in this subset functionally differentiated CD4<jats:sup>+<\/jats:sup> T cells are compartmentalized.
