By the use of cross\u2010linking experiments with radiolabeled interleukin\u20102 (IL\u20102), these abnormal T cells have been reported to constitutively express the IL\u20102 receptor \u03b2 chain (IL\u20102R\u03b1), a signal transducing component of IL\u20102R, in the absence of the a chain (IL\u20102R\u03b1).To critically reevaluate the role of the IL\u20102\/IL\u20102R pathway in the pathogenesis of lymphadenophathy we examined expression of the IL\u20102R\u03b1 and IL\u20102R\u03b2 in MRL\/lpr mice by <jats:sup>125<\/jats:sup>I\u2010IL\u20102 binding analysis and also by flow cytometric analysis using monoclonal antibodies against each component of the receptor. We found that, contrary to the previous report, the CD4<jats:sup>\u2212<\/jats:sup>8<jats:sup>\u2212<\/jats:sup>B220<jats:sup>+<\/jats:sup> \u03b1 \u03b2 T cells in lymph node (LN) of MRL\/lpr mice were negative for both IL\u20102R\u03b1 and IL\u20102R\u03b2 expression. The lpr liver CD4<jats:sup>\u2212<\/jats:sup>8<jats:sup>\u2212<\/jats:sup>B220<jats:sup>+<\/jats:sup> a P T cells that had been implicated in the genesis of these abnormal LN T cells were also negative for IL\u20102R\u03b2 expression.
