These were shown to contain effector cells exerting cytotoxicity via an F\u2010CMC mechanism which could be differentially triggered by PMA and ionomycin. F\u2010CMC operated in <jats:italic>trans<\/jats:italic>, requiring an <jats:italic>lpr<\/jats:italic> (Fas) product on target cells and a <jats:italic>gld<\/jats:italic> product on effector cells. Activated lymphocyte populations were also shown to contain F\u2010CMC target cells. Activated lymphocyte populations thus contained both effector and target F\u2010CMC cells, which could lyse each other.
