The heterotrimeric complex of the mouse exogenous \u03b1 and \u03b2 chains and the endogenous \u03b3 chain on mouse lymphoid BW5147 cells showed the ability to bind IL\u20102 with high affinity, resulting in IL\u20102\u2010induced tyrosine phosphorylation of a cytosolic tyrosine kinase, JAK3, which is involved in IL\u20102\u2010dependent signals. Exogenous introduction of the \u03b2 chain with the endogenous \u03b3 chain, however, could neither confer appreciable IL\u20102 binding nor IL\u20102\u2010induced signal transduction on BW5147 cells, unlike the human \u03b2\u03b3 heterodimer. Mouse spleen CD8<jats:sup>+<\/jats:sup> cells, not having the \u03b1 chain initially, showed IL\u20102\u2010dependent cell proliferation only when expression of the \u03b1 chain was induced.
