Potent production of interleukin (IL)\u201012 by infected macrophages is considered the determining factor in Th1 cell development. In contrast, it is assumed that IL\u20104 producers remain virtually unstimulated in listeriosis. In the liver, the major target organ of listeriosis, an unusual T lymphocyte population exists with the intriguing phenotype CD4<jats:sup>+<\/jats:sup>NK1.1<jats:sup>+<\/jats:sup> TCR\u03b1\/\u03b2<jats:sup>intermediate<\/jats:sup> (TCR\u03b1\/\u03b2<jats:sup>int<\/jats:sup>). Here we show that IL\u20104\u2010producing CD4<jats:sup>+<\/jats:sup>NK1.1<jats:sup>+<\/jats:sup>TCR\u03b1\/\u03b2<jats:sup>int<\/jats:sup> liver lymphocytes are down\u2010regulated early in listeriosis.
