The 5\u2032 region of the \u03bb5 gene has been shown to contain an enhancer that activates heterologous promoters. Here, we show that this enhancer, B<jats:sub>\u03bb5<\/jats:sub>, also acts as a lineage\u2010 and tissue\u2010restricted enhancer on its own promoter. We define the enhancer core, b<jats:sub>\u03bb5<\/jats:sub>, that carries around 50% of the total enhancer activity.
