A finite\u2010element code is used to account for the effect of spatial mode distributions and erbium concentration profile, while an iterative procedure, based on the Runge\u2010Kutta algorithm, allows to compute both gain and amplified spontaneous emission spectra. A comparison of the performance of 1480 and 980 nm pumped amplifiers is presented.
