After a review of the performance achieved with point\u2010to\u2010point single channel transmission systems, different frequency\u2010division\u2010multiplexed systems are analyzed for both point\u2010to\u2010point transmission and local area network applications. Attention has been devoted to possible applications of coherent optical systems in broadcast and local area networks exploiting both subcarrier and frequency division multiplexing techniques.
