Of these, selective protocols, while the most efficient, have the notable drawback of requiring large buffers at the receiver side. A new selective ARQ protocol with a finite\u2010length buffer is described in this paper. If A' is the number of codewords transmit\u2010table in the round\u2010trip delay, the described protocol requires a buffer having length equal to <jats:italic>N<\/jats:italic> + <jats:italic>N<jats:sub>a<\/jats:sub> N<jats:sub>a<\/jats:sub>\u22652<\/jats:italic> being an integer. A lower bound on the throughput of the described ARQ protocol is derived.
