Amplification of at least one gene was found in 12 samples (18%), of which 7 were amplified at multiple loci (58%). We observed amplifications for EGFR (10% of samples) and c\u2010<jats:italic>myc<\/jats:italic> (9%), as well as co\u2010amplification of <jats:italic>bcl<\/jats:italic>\u20101\/<jats:italic>int<\/jats:italic>\u20102 (7%). No amplifications were demonstrated for c\u2010Ha\u2010<jats:italic>ras<\/jats:italic>\u20101, TGF\u03b1, c\u2010<jats:italic>mos<\/jats:italic>, c\u2010<jats:italic>erb<\/jats:italic> B\u20102, or c\u2010<jats:italic>erb<\/jats:italic> A\u20102. The incidence of proto\u2010oncogene amplification in head\u2010and\u2010neck SCC patients is comparable to that reported for other solid tumours. There was no statistically significant difference in survival between patients with or without gene amplification.
