The systems investigated are [C<jats:sub>2<\/jats:sub>H<jats:sub>4<\/jats:sub>O<jats:sub>2<\/jats:sub>]<jats:sup>\u02d9+<\/jats:sup>, [C<jats:sub>2<\/jats:sub>H<jats:sub>5<\/jats:sub>NO]<jats:sup>\u02d9+<\/jats:sup>, [C<jats:sub>2<\/jats:sub>H<jats:sub>6<\/jats:sub>O]<jats:sup>\u02d9+<\/jats:sup>, [C<jats:sub>2<\/jats:sub>H<jats:sub>6<\/jats:sub>O<jats:sub>2<\/jats:sub>]<jats:sup>\u02d9+<\/jats:sup>, [C<jats:sub>3<\/jats:sub>H<jats:sub>6<\/jats:sub>O]<jats:sup>\u02d9+<\/jats:sup>, [C<jats:sub>3<\/jats:sub>H<jats:sub>6<\/jats:sub>O<jats:sub>2<\/jats:sub>]<jats:sup>\u02d9+<\/jats:sup>, [C<jats:sub>3<\/jats:sub>H<jats:sub>8<\/jats:sub>O]<jats:sup>\u02d9+<\/jats:sup>, and [C<jats:sub>3<\/jats:sub>H<jats:sub>8<\/jats:sub>O<jats:sub>2<\/jats:sub>]<jats:sup>\u02d9+<\/jats:sup>. The AM1 results are compared with <jats:italic>ab initio<\/jats:italic> molecular orbital calculations at different levels of theory up to MP3\/6\u201031G(<jats:italic>d<\/jats:italic>, <jats:italic>p<\/jats:italic>)\/\/SCF\/6\u201031G(<jats:italic>d<\/jats:italic>) + ZPVE and the available experimental data. AM1 fails to predict some local minima and the equilibrium geometries calculated for several complexes are found to be qualitatively different from those predicted by the <jats:italic>ab initio<\/jats:italic> calculations.
