While academic libraries often take advantage of networking to share a variety of resources and services, academic departments utilize the medium primarily to offer distance courses, collaborate on research, coordinate administrative functions, or to communicate with students and alumni. Distance programs expand a university's reach, but they have yet to challenge the structure of departments or to shift from the traditional paradigm of a \u201cdelivery\u201d view of education (Brown and Duguid, ). This paper describes an experiment to create a virtual department for international scholars with similar interests who are somewhat out of the mainstream research areas in their own institutions.
