{"status":"ok","message-type":"work","message-version":"1.0.0","message":{"indexed":{"date-parts":[[2025,10,21]],"date-time":"2025-10-21T00:47:09Z","timestamp":1761007629087,"version":"build-2065373602"},"reference-count":0,"publisher":"Wiley","issue":"1","license":[{"start":{"date-parts":[[2011,2,3]],"date-time":"2011-02-03T00:00:00Z","timestamp":1296691200000},"content-version":"vor","delay-in-days":94,"URL":"http:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/termsAndConditions#vor"}],"content-domain":{"domain":[],"crossmark-restriction":false},"short-container-title":["Proc of Assoc for Info"],"published-print":{"date-parts":[[2010,11]]},"abstract":"<jats:title>Abstract<\/jats:title><jats:p>The National Science Foundation's Virtual Organizations as Sociotechnical Systems program (VOSS) provides funding for \u201cresearch directed at advancing the understanding of what constitutes effective virtual organizations and under what conditions\u201d such organizations \u201ccan enable and enhance scientific, engineering, and education production and innovation.\u201d This panel brings together representatives of four VOSS\u2010funded research teams (from Florida State University, Syracuse University, Pennsylvania State University, and the University of Arkansas) to discuss the role of information science theories and methodologies in their different approaches to studying virtual organizations. The projects of these four teams investigate a variety of phenomena associated with virtual organizations, ranging from the life\u2010cycles of distributed scientific teams, through the interactions between core groups of scientists and volunteers in \u201ccitizen science,\u201d the socio\u2010technical requirements of loosely coupled emergent teams, to the roles of communication, trust, and leadership in teams. Following the theme of the conference, this panel focuses on navigating two different \u201cstreams\u201d in \u201cinformation ecosystems\u201d: it examines the ways in which information science scholars have successfully navigated one particular NSF funding stream, and it will also examine how these scholars investigate the information ecosystems of virtual organizations.
