Instead, they tend to follow and agree with articles and sources that hold similar viewpoints as theirs, a phenomenon known as confirmation bias. This suggests that when acquiring additional knowledge about a controversial topic, human biases and viewpoints about the topic may affect what information is considered trustworthy. We designed a user study to analyze various factors that may help in learning about a controversial topic without bias. In this paper, we study the impact of presenting contrasting viewpoints on learning about controversial claims. Our analysis shows that exposing subjects to contrasting viewpoints helped them learn more efficiently and reduce strongly\u2010held biases.<\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.1002\/meet.14504901291","type":"journal-article","created":{"date-parts":[[2013,1,24]],"date-time":"2013-01-24T10:49:23Z","timestamp":1359024563000},"page":"1-4","source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":3,"title":["Unbiased learning of controversial topics"],"prefix":"10.1002","volume":"49","author":[{"given":"V.G.Vinod","family":"Vydiswaran","sequence":"first","affiliation":[]},{"given":"ChengXiang","family":"Zhai","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[]},{"given":"Dan","family":"Roth","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[]},{"given":"Peter","family":"Pirolli","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[]}],"member":"311","published-online":{"date-parts":[[2013,1,24]]},"reference":[{"volume-title":"Thinking and deciding","year":"2000","author":"Baron J.","key":"e_1_2_8_2_1"},{"key":"e_1_2_8_3_1","doi-asserted-by":"crossref","unstructured":"Gallard A.
