Data was collected through a controlled laboratory experiment with 32 participants, each working with 4 search tasks. They were asked in questionnaires, both before and after the tasks, for task difficulty ratings and their reasoning for giving those ratings. We developed a coding scheme based on the difficulty reasons users gave, which covered various aspects of task, user, and user\u2010task interaction. This helps us understand search task difficulty, as well as provides a scheme for task difficulty control in experiment task design.<\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.1002\/meet.14505001125","type":"journal-article","created":{"date-parts":[[2014,5,8]],"date-time":"2014-05-08T16:35:28Z","timestamp":1399566928000},"page":"1-4","source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":6,"title":["Why do users feel search task difficult?"],"prefix":"10.1002","volume":"50","author":[{"given":"Jingjing","family":"Liu","sequence":"first","affiliation":[],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]},{"given":"Chang Suk","family":"Kim","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]},{"given":"Caitlin","family":"Creel","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]}],"member":"311","published-online":{"date-parts":[[2014,5,8]]},"reference":[{"key":"e_1_2_6_2_2","first-page":"35","article-title":"How does search behavior change as search becomes more difficult?","volume":"10","author":"Aula A.","year":"2010","journal-title":"Proceedings of CHI"},{"key":"e_1_2_6_3_2","unstructured":"Gwizdka J.(2008).Task difficulty revisited.Proceedings of ASIS&T '08."},{"key":"e_1_2_6_4_2","doi-asserted-by":"crossref","unstructured":"Gwizdka J. &Spence I.(2006).What can searching behavior tell us about the difficulty of information tasks?
