By analyzing information systems themselves as documents, we can better understand how information systems communicate these perspectives more and less persuasively, and we can use this understanding to facilitate the design of information systems for communicative purposes. This study examines one communicative mechanism available to information systems: the selective adaptation of genre conventions. Using theories of genre developed in rhetoric, composition, and applied linguistics, I show how two systems for organizing information, the Prelinger Library and the Warburg Institute classification, exhibit deviations from typical genre conventions for libraries, and I show how these deviations work as rhetorical tools to facilitate effective communication. I then demonstrate, using the creation of a prototype, how this understanding of genre as a communicative mechanism for information systems might be translated into the design context. By creating designs that incorporate an enhanced conceptual grasp of genre and other rhetorical properties of information systems, we can facilitate the construction of information systems that systematically and purposefully communicate original, creative points of view regarding their assembled collections, and so enable learning, discovery, and critical engagement for users.<\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.1002\/meet.2009.1450460232","type":"journal-article","created":{"date-parts":[[2010,1,29]],"date-time":"2010-01-29T10:54:32Z","timestamp":1264762472000},"page":"1-18","source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":2,"title":["Information system design for communication: The use of genre as a design element"],"prefix":"10.1002","volume":"46","author":[{"given":"Melanie","family":"Feinberg","sequence":"first","affiliation":[]}],"member":"311","published-online":{"date-parts":[[2010,11,18]]},"reference":[{"volume-title":"Shaping written knowledge","year":"1988","author":"Bazerman Charles","key":"e_1_2_7_2_1"},{"key":"e_1_2_7_3_1","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1007\/978-94-015-9696-1_7"},{"volume-title":"Worlds of written discourse","year":"2004","author":"Bhatia Vijay K.","key":"e_1_2_7_4_1"},{"key":"e_1_2_7_5_1","first-page":"217","volume-title":"The rhetorical situation","author":"Bitzer Lloyd","year":"1968"},{"key":"e_1_2_7_6_1","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1525\/9780520353237"},{"issue":"3","key":"e_1_2_7_7_1","first-page":"162","article-title":"Generic constraints and the rhetorical situation","volume":"6","author":"Jamieson Kathleen M.
