The goal of the present study was to determine if changes in magnetization transfer would accompany the myocardial remodeling that occurs with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. Using 40\u2010week spontaneously hypertensive rat (SHR) myocardium, <jats:italic>T<\/jats:italic><jats:sub>1<\/jats:sub>, <jats:italic>T<\/jats:italic><jats:sub>2<\/jats:sub>, and <jats:italic>T<\/jats:italic><jats:sub>1<\/jats:sub> in the presence of off\u2010resonance irradiation (<jats:italic>T<\/jats:italic><jats:sub>1sat<\/jats:sub>) were found to be greater compared to Wistar\u2010Kyoto (WKY) controls. The pseudo\u2010first order rate constant of magnetization transfer (k<jats:sub>for<\/jats:sub>) was less in 40\u2010week SHR compared with WKY while the ratio of equilibrium magnetization in the presence and absence of off\u2010resonance irradiation (<jats:italic>M<\/jats:italic><jats:sub>s<\/jats:sub>\/<jats:italic>M<\/jats:italic><jats:sub>0<\/jats:sub>) was not different. The extent to which observed interspecies differences in tissue water content affected these parameters was investigated by dehydrating normal and hypertrophic myocardium. Significant correlations found between tissue water content and <jats:italic>T<\/jats:italic><jats:sub>1<\/jats:sub>, <jats:italic>T<\/jats:italic><jats:sub>2<\/jats:sub>, <jats:italic>T<\/jats:italic><jats:sub>1sat<\/jats:sub> and <jats:italic>k<\/jats:italic><jats:sub>for<\/jats:sub>, but not <jats:italic>M<\/jats:italic><jats:sub>s<\/jats:sub>\/<jats:italic>M<\/jats:italic><jats:sub>0<\/jats:sub>, suggested changes in tissue water dominated the observed interspecies differences in relaxation parameters.
