The remainder of the control functions were performed manually. As the network grew from its infancy into what it is today, it could have become \u201cAn Operational Nightmare\u201d.<\/jats:p><jats:p>It became evident that it was necessary to develop into the network a completely automatic control system that would provide operations personnel with the tools for both recognizing and recovering from problems that might compromise either its availability or reliability. Included in this capability are the following:<jats:list list-type=\"explicit-label\"><jats:list-item><jats:p>The ability to detect and display the status of all the nodes.<\/jats:p><\/jats:list-item><jats:list-item><jats:p>The ability to detect and display the status of all links.<\/jats:p><\/jats:list-item><jats:list-item><jats:p>The ability to introduce new software.<\/jats:p><\/jats:list-item><jats:list-item><jats:p>The ability to measure the overall network performance.<\/jats:p><\/jats:list-item><jats:list-item><jats:p>The ability to schedule preventive maintenance.<\/jats:p><\/jats:list-item><jats:list-item><jats:p>The ability to detect imminent failures.<\/jats:p><\/jats:list-item><\/jats:list><\/jats:p><jats:p>This paper will show why this automated control system is necessary, how it is structured to record the pulse and heart\u2010beat of the network and finally how it is used to maintain the stability of the network.<\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.1002\/net.3230040402","type":"journal-article","created":{"date-parts":[[2007,5,11]],"date-time":"2007-05-11T01:57:49Z","timestamp":1178848669000},"page":"287-297","source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":0,"title":["Control of an expanding network\u2014\u201cAn operational nightmare\u201d"],"prefix":"10.1002","volume":"4","author":[{"given":"L.
