Ca<jats:sup>2+<\/jats:sup> and Mg<jats:sup>2+<\/jats:sup> have been applied by microiontophoresis, mainly in doses of 20\u2013200 nA, to cortical cells in cats under Dial.<\/jats:p><jats:p>2. Both divalent cations had a similar action, causing a sharp but reversible fall in the electrical excitability of neurones.<\/jats:p><jats:p>3. Ca<jats:sup>2+<\/jats:sup> was slightly more potent than Mg<jats:sup>2+<\/jats:sup>; in small doses the two cations had an additive effect.<\/jats:p><jats:p>4. The fall in neuronal excitability was not associated with definite changes in membrane potential or resistance.<\/jats:p><jats:p>5. The amounts of Ca<jats:sup>2+<\/jats:sup> and Mg<jats:sup>2+<\/jats:sup> applied did not cause any obvious alteration in synaptic efficiency.<\/jats:p><jats:p>6.
