In recent times, some extremist groups are treacherously using informational content to influence public perception. More seriously, these groups are targeting youth using religiously significant terms described with distorted interpretations. The discourse of these groups presents a romanticized view of destruction, trivializes loss of life and breeds hatred to anyone adhering to a different set of values. These extremist groups pose three important risks to communities: (1) influencing public perception and gaining silent sympathizers, (2) creating a sense of us versus them which then leads to discord and identity conflicts and (3) radicalizing and\/or recruiting youth. This research presents a digital prototype developed in a 3D\u2010environment, based on research concerning informational and affective properties of extremists' content, with an objective to educate youth against extremism.<\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.1002\/pra2.2017.14505401087","type":"journal-article","created":{"date-parts":[[2017,10,24]],"date-time":"2017-10-24T03:35:36Z","timestamp":1508816136000},"page":"612-613","update-policy":"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1002\/crossmark_policy","source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":1,"title":["Using virtual reality to counter extremism"],"prefix":"10.1002","volume":"54","author":[{"given":"Waseem","family":"Afzal","sequence":"first","affiliation":[{"name":"School of Information Studies Charles Sturt University Australia"}],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]},{"given":"Andrew","family":"Hagan","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"School of Communication and Creative Industries Charles Sturt University Australia"}],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]}],"member":"311","published-online":{"date-parts":[[2017,10,24]]},"reference":[{"key":"e_1_2_6_2_1","unstructured":"Faceware Technologies.
