The proposed method is the intensity\u2010difference stereo method utilizing several gray\u2010scale images obtained by a fixed camera and a light source with varying position. In the earlier method, the surface shape of the object is restored based on the gradient of the object surface determined by the intensity\u2010difference stereo method, where other methods must be combined in order to determine the three\u2010dimensional position of the object. In the proposed method, the shadow information is combined with the intensity\u2010difference stereo method, and an algorithm is proposed which can determine not only the three\u2010dimensional shape, but also the absolute coordinate in the three\u2010dimensional space with the plane carrying the object as the reference.
