This paper proposes a mechanism whereby multiple modules can cooperate with each other and process in parallel, each of which modules is designed to execute a dedicated image understanding algorithm.<\/jats:p><jats:p>An architecture to implement the mechanism onto a parallel computer is also presented. Knowledge regarding the execution of an algorithm and the results obtained by the execution are stored in each separate module. These results are accessed when the modules communicate with each other. Intra\u2010module parallel processing can be done by executing in parallel processes that are dynamically generated with query by query coming to each module to reply.
