This system consists of an image compression processor (ICP), a host mainframe computer and image reconstruction displays (IRDs). The ICP consists of a maximum of four parallel compression units with communication ports.<\/jats:p><jats:p>In this architecture, the hybrid algorithm, which includes serial operations, can be processed at high speed by communicating the internal data. The compressed data are transferred to the host's image database. The IRD can receive the compressed data from the host computer and reconstruct images of good quality at high speed using four pipeline\u2010based microprocessors. This system can reduce the load of the host by distributed processing using ICP and IRDs.<\/jats:p><jats:p>By experiments, the system was verified to be effective: ICP compressed alklk image in about 2 s.
