Thus, the trial\u2010and\u2010error method of providing random numbers distributed evenly over a certain range has come to be commonly used.<\/jats:p><jats:p>This paper defines characteristic parameters for a multilayer feedforward neural network to examine its information transmission capabilities and, using those parameters, clarifies the behavior of and problems with the conventional method using random initial values. One such problem is that the active range of a unit narrows rapidly as the number of inputs is increased.
