By using look\u2010up tables and bit\u2010serial architecture, the following operations can be performed: (1) bit\u2010pattern operations expressed as <jats:italic>Z = f(X<\/jats:italic><jats:sub>0<\/jats:sub>, <jats:italic>X<\/jats:italic><jats:sub>1<\/jats:sub>, \u2026, <jats:italic>X<\/jats:italic><jats:sub>8<\/jats:sub>), where <jats:italic>X<\/jats:italic><jats:sub>i<\/jats:sub> (0 \u2264 <jats:italic>i<\/jats:italic> \u22648) represent the gray levels of the pixels under a 3 \u00d7 3 mask; (2) comparisons of image data (with these operations, one derives the values of the maximum, the minimum, and the median); (3) filtering operations expressed as <jats:italic>Z<\/jats:italic> = \u03c3(<jats:italic>A<jats:sub>i<\/jats:sub>. X<jats:sub>i<\/jats:sub><\/jats:italic>), where <jats:italic>A<jats:sub>i<\/jats:sub><\/jats:italic> and <jats:italic>X<jats:sub>i<\/jats:sub><\/jats:italic> are weight coefficients and gray levels of pixels, respectively.
