The multicopy <jats:italic>MSI2<\/jats:italic> also suppresses the heat shock sensitivity of cells with the <jats:italic>RAS2<jats:sup>val19<\/jats:sup><\/jats:italic> mutation but not those with the <jats:italic>bcy1<\/jats:italic> mutation, suggesting that the <jats:italic>MSI2<\/jats:italic> protein may interfere with the activity of the <jats:italic>RAS<\/jats:italic> protein. The sequence analysis of <jats:italic>MSI2<\/jats:italic> reveals that it is identical to <jats:italic>LTE1<\/jats:italic> belonging to the <jats:italic>CDC25<\/jats:italic> family: <jats:italic>CDC25<\/jats:italic>, <jats:italic>SCD25<\/jats:italic> and <jats:italic>BUD5<\/jats:italic>, each of which encodes a guanine nucleotide exchange factor for the <jats:italic>ras<\/jats:italic> superfamily gene products. Deletion of the entire <jats:italic>MSI2<\/jats:italic> coding region reveals that <jats:italic>MSI2<\/jats:italic> is not essential but the disruptant shows a cold\u2010sensitive phenotype. Under the non\u2010permissive conditions, more than 70% of the <jats:italic>msi2<\/jats:italic> disruptants arrested at telophase as large budded cells with two nuclei divided completely and elongated spindles, indicating that the <jats:italic>msi2<\/jats:italic> deletion is a cell division cycle mutation.
