This hinders the excess storage of Li ions in Li\u2010ion batteries, thereby limiting their applications. However, the associated electrochemical processes and mechanisms have not been investigated owing to the low electrochemical reactivity and poor crystallinity of the C<jats:sub>60<\/jats:sub> powder. Herein, a facile method for synthesizing pure fcc C<jats:sub>60<\/jats:sub> nanoparticles with uniform morphology and superior electrochemical performance in both half\u2010 and full\u2010cells is demonstrated using a 1 <jats:sc>m<\/jats:sc> LiPF<jats:sub>6<\/jats:sub> solution in ethylene carbonate\/diethyl carbonate (1:1 vol%) with 10% fluoroethylene carbonate. The specific capacity of the C<jats:sub>60<\/jats:sub> nanoparticles during the second discharge reaches \u2248750 mAh g<jats:sup>\u22121<\/jats:sup> at 0.1 A g<jats:sup>\u22121<\/jats:sup>, approximately twice that of graphite. Moreover, by applying in situ X\u2010ray diffraction, high\u2010resolution transmission electron microscopy, and first\u2010principles calculations, an abnormally high Li storage in a crystalline C<jats:sub>60<\/jats:sub> structure is proposed based on the vacant sites among the C<jats:sub>60<\/jats:sub> molecules, Li clusters at different sites, and structural changes during the discharge\/charge process. The fcc of C<jats:sub>60<\/jats:sub> transforms tetragonal via orthorhombic Li<jats:italic><jats:sub>x<\/jats:sub><\/jats:italic>C<jats:sub>60<\/jats:sub> and back to the cubic phase during discharge. The presented results will facilitate the development of novel fullerene\u2010based anode materials for Li\u2010ion
