Pollen\u2010based climate quantification provides a reconstruction of seasonal parameters. The development of <jats:italic>in\u2010situ<\/jats:italic> water\u2010dependant plants and of forests at lower altitude at 8200 cal a BP echoes the shift from an arid and cold [annual precipitation (P<jats:sub>ann<\/jats:sub>)\u2009=\u2009452\u2009mm; mean temperature of the coldest month (MTCO)\u2009=\u2009\u221211.1\u2009\u00b0C)] Early Holocene to a more humid and warmer (P<jats:sub>ann<\/jats:sub>\u2009=\u2009721\u2009mm; MTCO\u2009=\u2009\u22126.8\u2009\u00b0C) Mid\u2013Late Holocene. This marks the onset of lower seasonality, in particular more effective precipitation brought during late spring by the Westerlies. Paralleling the Mediterranean precipitation pattern, precipitation in the Near East and Central Asia decreased during the Mid\u2013Late Holocene in favour of higher seasonality controlled in winter\/spring by the Siberian High. Fire history and sedge\u2010based fen development record drier phases at approximately 6400, 5300\u20134900, 3000, 2200\u20131500 and 400 cal a BP, which resemble the precipitation pattern of the South\u2010Western Mediterranean and contrast with the Holocene pattern in the South\u2010Central and South\u2010Eastern Mediterranean regions.
