{"status":"ok","message-type":"work","message-version":"1.0.0","message":{"indexed":{"date-parts":[[2026,2,19]],"date-time":"2026-02-19T09:43:10Z","timestamp":1771494190816,"version":"3.50.1"},"reference-count":20,"publisher":"Wiley","issue":"4","license":[{"start":{"date-parts":[[2003,4,15]],"date-time":"2003-04-15T00:00:00Z","timestamp":1050364800000},"content-version":"vor","delay-in-days":14,"URL":"http:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/termsAndConditions#vor"}],"content-domain":{"domain":[],"crossmark-restriction":false},"short-container-title":["Phytotherapy Research"],"published-print":{"date-parts":[[2003,4]]},"abstract":"<jats:title>Abstract<\/jats:title><jats:p>Petroleum ether, acetone, 80% MeOH and water extracts of crown gall, a plant tumour, obtained from <jats:italic>Eucalyptus globulus<\/jats:italic> tree were screened for cytotoxic, antioxidant, antiin\ufb02ammatory, embryotoxic, antitumour\u2010promoting and antimicrobial activities.<\/jats:p><jats:p>In terms of bioactivity the 80% MeOH extract was most effective followed by the acetone extract. The petroleum ether extract showed weak to moderate cytotoxic activity in dose\u2010dependent manner against PC12 cells, mouse L \ufb01broblasts and 1321N1 glia cells, whereas the hydroalcohol extract had no or a weak cytotoxic effect. The 80% MeOH extract exhibited strong antioxidant activity. Based on the <jats:italic>in vitro<\/jats:italic> HET\u2010CAM assay all the extracts were effective against in\ufb02ammation. The extracts did not show any embryotoxic effect at the concentrations tested. Antitumour\u2010promoting activity (100% inhibition; 100\u00a0\u00b5g\/mL) was observed in the 80% MeOH and acetone extracts. In the antimicrobial screening all extracts displayed predominantly antifungal activity against <jats:italic>Candida sp.<\/jats:italic> The extracts also showed various levels of antibacterial activity against <jats:italic>E. faecalis<\/jats:italic>, <jats:italic>Ps. aeruginosa<\/jats:italic>, <jats:italic>Bac. subtilis<\/jats:italic> and <jats:italic>Staph. epidermidis<\/jats:italic>.<\/jats:p><jats:p>From the results of the investigations it can be concluded that crown gall is a valuable plant tumour tissue having interesting biological activities.
