The geomagnetic\u2010based <jats:italic>B<\/jats:italic> series from 1845 to 2013 is a weighted composite of two series that employ the interdiurnal variability index; this series is highly correlated with in situ spacecraft measurements of <jats:italic>B<\/jats:italic> (correlation coefficient, <jats:italic>r<\/jats:italic>\u2009=\u20090.94; mean square error, MSE\u2009=\u20090.16\u2009nT<jats:sup>2<\/jats:sup>). The SSN\u2010based estimate of <jats:italic>B<\/jats:italic>, from 1750 to 2013, is a weighted composite of eight time series derived from two separate reconstruction methods applied to four different SSN time series, allowing determination of the uncertainty from both the underlying sunspot records and the <jats:italic>B<\/jats:italic> reconstruction methods. The SSN\u2010based composite is highly correlated with direct spacecraft measurements of <jats:italic>B<\/jats:italic> and with the composite geomagnetic <jats:italic>B<\/jats:italic> time series from 1845 to 2013 (<jats:italic>r<\/jats:italic>\u2009=\u20090.91; MSE\u2009=\u20090.24\u2009nT<jats:sup>2<\/jats:sup>), demonstrating that <jats:italic>B<\/jats:italic> can accurately reconstructed by both geomagnetic and sunspot\u2010based methods.
