These charts are preferable over charts for proportion (<jats:italic>p<\/jats:italic>) of defective items, named<jats:italic>p<\/jats:italic>\u2010charts, when the sample size (<jats:italic>n<\/jats:italic>) remains constant for all subgroups. The benefits of using<jats:italic>np<\/jats:italic>\u2010charts over<jats:italic>p<\/jats:italic>\u2010charts are: an easier interpretation and the fact that no calculation is required for each sample result. We provide a review of the basic issues related to<jats:italic>np<\/jats:italic>\u2010charts and some recent ideas on the topic based on life distributions.
