That which was but a short sentence in the\n            <jats:italic>torrentiniana<\/jats:italic>\n            edition of his\n            <jats:italic>Lives of the Artists<\/jats:italic>\n            (1550) and enlarged with more detail in the\n            <jats:italic>juntina<\/jats:italic>\n            edition (1568) was the source of a complex and passionate discussion among historians of the art of Portugal for many years.
