Nonsporeforming. Aerobic, oxidase\u2010negative, and catalase\u2010positive. Chemo\u2010organotrophic. Mesophilic. Colonies are small and yellow\u2010pigmented. The cell\u2010wall peptidoglycan\n                      <jats:bold>is of the B\u2010type containing lysine or ornithine<\/jats:bold>\n                      as the diagnostic amino acid. Fatty acids are predominantly iso\u2010 and anteiso\u2010branched, namely C\n                      <jats:sub>15:0<\/jats:sub>\n                      anteiso, C\n                      <jats:sub>16:0<\/jats:sub>\n                      iso, C\n                      <jats:sub>14:0<\/jats:sub>\n                      iso, and C\n                      <jats:sub>15:0<\/jats:sub>\n                      iso. Mycolic acids are not present. The respiratory quinones are unsaturated\n                      <jats:bold>menaquinones with 11\u201314 isoprene<\/jats:bold>\n                      units, with predominance of MK\u201012 and MK\u201013. Phylogenetic analysis based on the 16S rRNA gene sequences places the genus\n                      <jats:italic>Microcella<\/jats:italic>\n                      in the family\n                      <jats:italic>Microbacteriaceae<\/jats:italic>\n                      . The closest phylogenetic neighbor is\n                      <jats:italic>Yonghaparkia alkaliphila<\/jats:italic>\n                      . The species of\n                      <jats:italic>Microcella<\/jats:italic>\n                      are\n                      <jats:bold>alkaliphilic<\/jats:bold>\n                      and the strains were isolated from a non\u2010saline highly alkaline (pH 11.4) groundwater located in Southern Portugal.\n                    <\/jats:p>\n                    <jats:p>\n
