She qualified as a primary school teacher, but soon gave up this career to become a reporter. She immigrated to Botswana in her twenties and settled in Serowe, the historical village that produced the first president of Botswana. Her work reflects the local culture, history, and customs of the Tswana people, emphasizing the value of ordinary life and humble people. As a harsh realist, resistant and reactionary, Head embodies the contradictions of South Africa under apartheid and of Botswana after independence in 1966. In the late 1970s she was granted Botswanan citizenship, but her legacy as a writer is also recognized by South Africa.<\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.1002\/9781119076506.wbeps154","type":"other","created":{"date-parts":[[2017,6,23]],"date-time":"2017-06-23T17:16:58Z","timestamp":1498238218000},"page":"1-2","source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":0,"title":["Head, Bessie"],"prefix":"10.1002","author":[{"given":"Orquidea","family":"Ribeiro","sequence":"first","affiliation":[]}],"member":"311","published-online":{"date-parts":[[2016,1,28]]},"reference":[{"volume-title":"Bessie Head.
