The information obtained from these techniques help gain insight on the mechanisms of metal adsorption and binding to clay surfaces, which traditionally rely on surface complexation models. Owing to the uncertainty on parameters, such as number and type of surface sites and types of surface complexes, spectroscopic analysis may be fundamental in constraining such variables and provide more robust, predictable, and reliable models for metal dispersion and transport in the natural environment (contaminated or not).
