In the third century it became the capital of the Roman province of Gallaecia and subsequently of the Swabian kingdom. Extensive excavations have yielded much information about the city. The most important contributions of archaeology include the identification of the original urban plan, the discovery of public and private buildings, and the study of the necropolis.
